Meth bust nets the arrests of 7

Seven area residents including two from Jackson County were arrested Tuesday morning on charges related to the production of methamphetamine in Jefferson County, police say.

According to a report from the Indiana State Police, the arrests stem from an investigation by troopers responding to an anonymous tip about a possible methamphetamine lab operation near Lexington.

Those arrested include Jonathan Chilton, 24, of Crothersville and Jennifer Smith, 30, of Seymour. Both Chilton and Smith face charges of manufacturing methamphetamine, a Class B felony, and visiting a common nuisance, a Class B misdemeanor.

Chilton also was wanted on a Clark County warrant for a pseudoephedrine violation, police said.

Four others face charges of manufacturing methamphetamine: Martha Barger, 52, Lexington, Kenneth Sean Albertson, 33, Scottsburg, Tisha Smith, 29, Austin, and Brandon Smith, 31, Austin. All six face charges of manufacturing methamphetamine.

Barger faces an additional charge of maintaining a common nuisance while Albertson and the Smiths face additional charges of visiting a common nuisance.

Jonathon Barger, 56, of North Vernon also faces a charge of visiting a common nuisance.

All seven suspects were taken to the Jefferson County Jail in Madison.

The arrests occurred after officers responding to the scene smelled odors coming from the residence and sought and received a search warrant. After obtaining the warrant, police reported they searched the home and found a working methamphetamine lab.

An Indiana State Police Clandestine Lab Team was called to dismantle the lab.

The investigation is ongoing, police reported, and as the investigation progresses, other charges may be filed.

Citizens may contact the Indiana State Police if they suspect drug activity or any other criminal activity. Callers can remain anonymous as they did in this incident and the tip will still be investigated.

Indiana State Police can be contacted at (812) 689-5000 or (800) 566-6704.

Assisting the Indiana State Police was Hanover Police Department and Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies.
