Barn destroyed by fire

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department responded to the report of a barn fire Monday afternoon in Medora.

At 4:53 p.m. Monday, Ruth Riley, owner of Red Sky Kennels, reported her barn on fire, according to a news release from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department.

Carr and Owen Township fire departments were still on scene and no cost estimate was available, but the barn was a total loss. The home close to the barn was not damaged and no animals were involved.

The barn was about a 30-foot by 48-foot wood and metal-sided structure. The barn was fully involved when Owen and Carr fire departments arrived on scene. Riley said the barn had no utilities other than water that ran to the structure, the release stated. There was a vehicle in the barn, along with a mower and bales of hay.

According to the initial report taken by County Deputy Adam Nicholson, mowing in the area had just been completed and a mower was parked inside the barn, possibly contributing to the blaze.

The primary responding fire department was Owen Township, and assisting was Carr Township Fire Department.

Along with Nicholson, County Detective Bob Lucas also responded.
