Thumbs up to Seymour Lions Club and Seymour Main Street for staging their Halloween events Oct. 26 on the streets of downtown Seymour. The Lions Club parade is always a fun event for children of all ages and their families. Teaming the Downtown Trick-or-Treat with the Lions Club parade has helped attract many people to the city’s center. We offer a similar thumbs up for organizers of the Brownstown Halloween parade Oct. 31.

Thumbs up to Seymour High School’s Key Club and Brownstown Central High School Student Council for collecting supplies of food in connection with Halloween. Students asked residents to donate bags of food to help the community’s food pantries, all of which have seen an increase in demand during the tough economy.

Thumbs up to Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge, Jackson County Recycling District and Purdue Extension Jackson County for teaming to present the annual Conservation Field Day program at the refuge. It allowed area schoolchildren a chance to get out of the classroom and engage in hands-on education while learning about the environment and our community.

Thumbs up to the Lady Braves volleyball team. The Brownstown Central High School squad finds itself in familiar territory tomorrow — heading to the semistate after winning its eighth-straight regional tournament Saturday. The Lady Braves face longtime tournament rival Muncie Burris at semistate. We wish them well.

Thumbs up to the eight area residents who recently completed training to serve as literacy tutors through READ Jackson County: Terry Lyon-McCarthy, Kay Oathout, Dee Asbury, Juanita Shelton, Joan Sturgeon, Tim Purvis, Wendy Correll and Benjamin Correll. Too many Jackson County residents lack the reading skills needed to thrive. Tutors provide an important service for such people and for our community.

And let’s give a thumbs up to programs such as Spooky Story Night at Margaret R. Brown Elementary School and story times at Jackson County Public Library and Brownstown Public Library.
