A temporary fix of gasoline prices

Indiana 9th District Rep. Baron Hill recently sent a letter to President George W. Bush requesting that he suspend purchases of fuel oil for the Strategic Petroleum Reserve  and let it flow into the open marketplace, increasing the supply of fuel to consumers with the idea of driving down the prices we all pay at the gasoline pump.

The letter, also signed by Kentucky Rep.  John Yarmuth, asks the president to direct the Department of Energy to temporarily stop buying oil for the reserve program and contends that doing so "would allow more oil to remain on the market, and thus drive down gas prices for consumers" by as much as a quarter a gallon of gasoline.

We agree with Hill's assertion that such an action should not be considered a long-term fix. It certainly is not. But as the congressmen pointed out in their letter to Bush, the request comes with precedence for short-term relief. The letter states that the strategic reserve is 95 percent full - about the same level it was when President Bush approved a temporary suspension to relieve supply and price crunches after hurricanes Katrina and Rita in summer 2005.

Of course, a better long-term reaction would be for Congress to enact legislation that would lift restrictions on drilling for oil and allow market forces to better respond through development of alternative energy sources and more freely allow the construction of nuclear power plants. But for now, a temporary suspension of the reserve program could make sense.

Barons call to tap the oil reserves is terribly short sighted and misses the point of why we have that supply It is not to save a quarter at the pump but rather it is to supply critical needs in a time of emergency if our traditional supply is disrupted Baron should stop taking the side of the unreasonable environmentalists and make a real difference by allowing us to drill for new supplies. I am tired of the fecal matter from the Dems where they whine and cry about oil prices. It is simple supply and demand issue and Baron and his bunch wont allow us to increase supplies through new drilling and rescue us from dependancy upon foreign oil. We are getting drilled because he wont let us drill Go figure.

It seems as though csm was trying to correct Charlie by talking about an baron. If you are trying to correct, it would be a good idea to know how.

charlie, I think the proper article is "an" oil baron. Just trying to extirpate.

OH, if we're going to talk about fiction and not reality then we should make this thread about the bible and god.

Roger, I read the same report as you. You seem to have missed about 75 pct of it though. The "warm period" you speak of was warmer than the years before or after that period. That's all. But far cooler than today. There's plenty of green vegetation in Greenland today. You make it sound like it all died in 1300. Man, you must love the taste of dirt, because you're living with you head in the sand.

Greenland was reached via Iceland by the Vikings in the 10th century AD. According to scientists who have take core samples the climate on Greenland experienced an unusually warm period from about 800AD to 1300AD. Scientists say that the coastal areas sustained green vegetation during this period. This is not to say it was a tropical paradise but it was substantially warmer than it is today.

As an extension to Baron's plan to abandon the strategic petroleum reserves, Baron could just supply us with free gasoline. He may also mandate 100 mp ear vehicles that run directly on ears of corn. We should expect some free stuff, it is an election year.

That's pretty hilarious gregory. Either you're a total moron or you're intentionally lying to everyone here. Because as every school kid knows, Greenland was Icy and Iceland was green. The vikings switched the names 1000 years ago to trick people into moving to Greenland. Oh, you never opened a history book in your life? I gathered that already. And Bear, I'm surprised at you. You're smarter than to fall for a thousand year old viking trick. Geez.

Dry Tank is right. I traveled from here to Oklahoma, then through Texas, across to Biloxi, MS and then back North to Seymour. The most expensive fuel was found in Seymour!

Lets see here, the states and federal govrenment are making tax revenue on fuel taxes of 72 billion per year ,I wonder what the problem is.

Gregory, hard to argue logic like that! I agree Global warming is happening, or could be happening, but man causing it? I was watching a program on the nature channel the other day, and actually really got into it! Instead of talking about man causing global warming bull like they usually do it was a very informative show. They were saying that the earth has warmed up and cooled down 6 times in the last 10,000 years! And that this time is no different then the others, but because man is so called intelligent we saw ways to capitalize and make trillions of dollars in the mean time by scarring people into thinking they are causing global warming. I for one am smoking SUV fumes! Sing with me now, Smoking SUV fumes! Oh ya. Come on global warming, I would love to boat all year long!

How did Greenland get its name? Its called Greenland because about a thousand years ago the climate was warm enough to support vegitation and farming. Did the Vikings drive SUVs to cause this warming period around 1000 AD or do you think it may have just happened naturally?

Maybe Baron Hill should send a letter to the folks who run our local gas stations. Wake up Seymour, we are being raped at our pumps by money hungry gas station owners. Travel out of Seymour and compare prices. Its obvious.
