Lady Owls soccer team 1-1 at Columbus; Owls lose, Cougars tie

The Seymour and Trinity Lutheran soccer teams battled some strong opponents Saturday and finished with a combined record of 1-2-1.
The Lady Owls were 1-1 in the Columbus North Tournament as they lost to North 4-2, then defeated Oldenburg Academy by a score of 7-1.
The Owls lost 2-1 to Providence at C.B. Hess Field, and Trinity battled to a 2-2 tie with Rising Sun at home.
Cougars tie Shiners
Coach Dan Sievert said the Cougars played strong defense for 75 minutes, then had a letdown in the closing minutes that allowed the Shiners to tie the score.
After a scoreless first half, Bradley Tabeling scored two goals in less than three minutes to put the Cougars up 2-0.
Tabeling received a ball cleared from the defensive end, dribbled from midfield through several defenders and scored at 33:09.
Tabeling made it 2-0 on an assist from Kody Riddle at 30:47.
Rising Sun scored at 28:01, and tied the game at 1:34. "We just fell apart at the end," Sievert said. "We got a little tired and started ball watching, but for the most part they played a good 75 minutes of defense."
"We were real happy, after last year's game against Rising Sun, to keep it 0-0 at the half. Last year they were a very dominant team, and we've come a long way.
"Our goal going into the game was not to give up any goals, and that lasted for about a half. We came out tied 2-2 and we're real proud of our efforts here."
The Cougars had 15 shots. Sievert said, "We had a talk at halftime about giving up the ball too early and needing to hold onto it a little but longer with a hard dribble and Tabeling was able to dribble around a couple players and bury it in the net from about the top of the 6 box, and did it again. Hands down to him. He had a great day."
Sievert said the Cougars mid-field defense is still developing. "We've got very young team and usually where you see that most is mid-field control, and there were just some big bodies on Rising Sun that we went up against and our players fought like mad to control the ball. With these dry conditions the ball bounces a lot it became a fast-paced game where the ball could get to the other end real quick."
The Cougars, 1-0-1, will be home to Hauser today for a 5 p.m. match. Tuesday's match against Switzerland County will also be on the Cougars' field.
Pioneers tip Owls
After a scoreless first half, Aaron Brown gave the Owls a 1-0 lead at the 32:21-mark, with an assist from Reid Martin.
The Pioneers tied the game on a penalty kick at 26:42, then scored the winning goal at 21:32 to leave the Owls 1-1 for the season.
"I thought the penalty kick they got was a little unlucky for us," Owls coach Wil Smith said. "The goal they got was a defensive mistake over on the left side. We've got to get our defense fixed.
Smith expected a defensive battle. "We knew Providence would be coming for us. The game was pretty even the whole way. We got our fair share of shots. Some didn't go."
The Owls had 12 shots to 8 for the Pioneers.
Smith said his team felt the affects of the heat and humidity. "I thought our team started to get tired toward the end, and when they got tired they started banging the ball up the field instead of always touching it to somebody else's feet. That is something we've got to work on.
"I said last week we weren't fit enough. We've been running them in practice. Maybe we're not running them enough."
The Owls will play Columbus East today at the Wigh Soccer Center in their Hoosier Hills Conference opener.
Lady Owls third
COLUMBUS - Seymour had an easy time winning the consolation game as it held a 3-0 lead at the half and added four goals in the second half.
Ali Reed and Kaitlin Grindlay both had two goals, and Heather Jones had a goal and an assist.
In the opening round, North held a 2-1 lead at the half.
Meredith Adams and Julie Nielson scored the Seymour goals.
The Owls are 2-1 and will travel to Shelbyville Tuesday.
