BEDFORD - The goals of the Brownstown Central and Seymour girls cross country teams was to qualify for regional, and both teams did that Tuesday in the Bedford North Lawrence Sectional.

BNL, with five runners in the top 15, easily ran away with the title with 47 points. Brownstown was second with 79 points, Seymour had 96, and Paoli and Salem rounded out the teams qualifying for the regional.
Brownstown had two girls in the top 10 as Hope Lockman was  fifth at 20:45, and Victoria Ollo was 10th at 21:32.

Lockman found herself in first place after the mile, much to the surprise of coach Derrick Koch. "I didn't want her to go out that fast, but after seeing how she ran I'm glad she did.

"I'm pleased  with them. I wanted to see how they held up against BNL and I thought they did a good job."
Seymour's top two finishers were Christina Moravec and Katherine Morevec, 12th and 13th at 22:09 and 22:14.

Owls coach Spencer Sunbury said he knew going in that BNL would be the team to beat, and he was hoping his team could challenge Brownstown for second. "Brownstown ran well. Brownstown ran a lot stronger than I expected.
"I thought we ran well. I think we'll do well Saturday."

Seymour's Paiton Chastain, who has been Seymour's No. 3 runner in several races this season, was running third for the Owls when she became dehydrated  part way through the race and fell and was unable to finish.
Lockman wasn't the only freshman to shine as Trinity Lutheran's Taylor Royalty finished third at 20:11.

"That was close to her best effort," coach Jay Cherry said. "She had a faster time on our course, but our course is flat. I don't think she was disappointed in her performance at all."

The Crothersville girls finished eighth with 197 points, and Courtney Killey led the Tigers by finishing 31st at 24:21.

The top five teams and top 15 individuals advance to the BNL Regional that will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
