COLUMBUS - Seniors Cody Owen and Joe Rust went 5-0 when the Seymour wrestling team competed in the Columbus East Invitational on Saturday.
As a team, Seymour defeated Triton Central 39-36 and Wapahani 60-18, but lost to Greenwood 57-18, Columbus East 54-24 and Northview 48-32.
Owen competed in the 152 weight class and Rust wrestled at heavyweight. Owen, who is now 12-7 on the season, had five falls and Rust (18-4) had two.
Other Owl wrestlers with winning records were senior Eric Barger (4-1 with two falls) and sophomores Stephen Fleming (3-2 with two falls) and Colton Wright (3-2 with one fall). Barger wrestled in the 171 weight division, and his season record stands at 16-7. Fleming was in the 189 class and Wright was in 215.
Coming off of a 76-0 dual match loss to Columbus North on Thursday, coach Curt Schleibaum said the Owls' results were positive.
"We saw good things out of our boys," Schleibaum said of Saturday. "They all seemed to be ready to wrestle and really stuck together as a team, which is so important. All of our seniors have worked hard to encourage our younger wrestlers after last week's lost to North, and I think we saw some of the results of that effort (on Saturday)."
Seymour will make up a match at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Brown County. The original date was Dec. 16, but the match was canceled due to the weather.
