Brave Wave swims by Stingrays

Win continues Brownstown's undefeated streak

BROWNSTOWN -- Through five matches this summer season, the Brownstown Brave Wave swim team's record remains unblemished.

After defeating the Scott County Family YMCA Stingrays 693-242 Tuesday night at Brownstown, the Brave Wave moved to 5-0.

The team has a home meet Thursday before the South Central Indiana Swim Conference meet on July 11. If they remain undefeated, it will mark the eighth straight year.

"Nine years ago, we won our first meet in years, so they've really turned it around," said coach Sharon Koch, who is in her 10th year.

On Tuesday, the Brave Wave took first place in 61 of 75 events.

"We had a lot of newcomers swim for the first time, and that's fun to see," Koch said of Tuesday's meet. "I think it is good for the little ones to see the older ones. They can benefit a lot if these guys pay attention to the older guys."

This year, 102 kids from age 5 to 18 make up the Brave Wave's roster, and Koch said that's another thing that has made a difference in the program.

"It's changed a lot," she said. "I think they used to be smaller, and we've gotten very large. Our size makes a huge difference, and our kids do really well. The 9, 10, 11, 12 age group is probably our largest numbers. As they get older, understandably they want to go do sports the high school has, so we start losing the numbers."

The assistant coaches, those helping with practices and the parents do a lot to support the program, too, Koch said.

"I think the level of commitment our parents have is huge," she said. "Most of them will travel. Tonight, we had 12 timers, and we don't have to ask a visiting team to provide anything. Our parents are wonderful."

Plus, as timers, they get front-row seats to all of the swimming action.

Two Brave Wave swimmers, 14-year-old Kennedy McKeand and 8-year-old Cameron Maupin, were among those competing Tuesday night.

McKeand has been a part of the team for about seven years, and she will be a freshman at Brownstown Central High School in the fall.

She competed in five events Tuesday, placing first individually in the 50-meter freestyle and with the mixed 200-meter freestyle relay team and mixed 200-meter medley relay team. Also, she was third in the 50-meter butterfly and fourth in the 50-meter breaststroke.

McKeand said she's best at freestyle events.

"It's just something I like," she said.

Maupin placed fourth in the 25- and 50-meter freestyle races, and he swam a leg in the winning 100-meter medley relay. He also competed in the 25-meter backstroke and the 100-meter freestyle relay.

Maupin also said he prefers freestyle.

"I think I go a lot faster than the other (events)," he said of the freestyle.

His brother, Nolan, 10, also is on the team, and Cameron said that was one reason he joined the team.

McKeand said she joined the team for something to do, and she wishes a team would be formed at the high school.

"I wasn't really involved in anything, and you get to talk and get to know different people," she said.

The coaches have been a big help to both swimmers.

"Just our drills and practice, they've told me what I have problems with and helped me work with it," McKeand said. "I think I've improved."

Maupin added, "They teach me how to be better."

Koch said practices began the day after the last day of school, and they practice from 8:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Those who can't make it to that session can attend the one at 6 p.m.

The team has six regular season meets before conference.

Between all of the practices and experience gained every year, Koch said, it all contributes to the team's success

"We don't really have any weak areas," she said. "It's fun to see the progressions, especially over the years. If you look at them, these kids will look great now that they are 13, and we remember them when they were 5. To see them change in skill and to see the excitement of the little ones is wonderful."
