Owl wrestlers earn first win of season

For the first time this season, the Seymour wrestling team gave up less weight classes than their opponents, and that resulted in a 48-30 win for the Owls on Tuesday night in their home opener over Southwestern (Hanover).

The Owls only gave up one position, at 119, but the Rebels only had seven wrestlers, so they gave up seven weight classes and gave the Owls 42 of their 48 points.

“We are always pleased to see a W go down in the scorebooks,” Owls coach Curt Schleibaum said.

The Rebels began the match with two wins, over Kyle McCauley at 145 and Blake Schultheis at 152, to give them a slight advantage. Logan Carpenter picked up a forfeit for the Owls at 160, and Stephen Fleming scored the Owls’ first win when he pinned Stuart Bramer in 30 seconds with a takedown.

The Owls won the next three weight classes by forfeits, and they never lost the lead.

“Stephen is one of our more veteran wrestlers out there and his kid was pushing into him, so he saw the opportunity to take his opponent down and he did,” Schleibaum said. “I saw a lot of positives out there with my other wrestlers. In wrestling, it is one of those sports where the positives can be hiding behind the loss of a kid.
“We had kids working to get out on bottom, and with the kids we had to match up with, they have some tough wrestlers in those spots.

“Definitely we are a younger team, and as long as we can see some improvement on the film we are happy. I thought we had a couple of kids who could have wrestled better.”

Of the wrestlers for the Rebels, they won five weight classes with two pins, two major decisions and one decision.

“I thought McCauley wrestled well, but I would like to have seen him get the win,” Schleibaum said. “We are going to look at that one and see where we can improve ourselves so we can match up with these kids later on in the season. We have to learn from these losses and get better to improve.
“We are moving people around all the time and are very fluid with our weight classes. We are pushing real hard to recruit at all levels. We have Michael Camp wrestling at 112 and he is giving up 10 pounds and that is a big 10 pounds there. He has a lot of fight in him, and as a team, they are starting to come together and work together for victories and I love to see that.”

The Owls will travel to Columbus East on Friday and Jeffersonville on Saturday for the Hoosier Hills Conference duals.
