Highlanders blank Owls in HHC baseball tournament

The Seymour baseball team found out the hard way Monday what happens when you make base-running mistakes throughout a game.
The Owls had runners on base in eight of the nine innings against Floyd Central, but left 11 runners stranded and lost 2-0  in the opening round of the Hoosier Hills Conference Tournament.

"It all goes back to the first inning," coach Bob Bowman said. "We had a runner picked off second. (Cody Frische) hit one off the fence and we didn't have anyone on second. We would have scored a run and had runners on second and third with no outs. We should have won this game in seven innings.

"We made offensive mental errors. We had our opportunities in four or five innings and could not bring them in. We had our leadoff runner picked off first, we had runners on first and second and had a runner picked off second."

Seymour also had two runners thrown out at the plate, and left the bases loaded in the sixth inning.
In the sixth, Trevor Thompson and Jesse Wilson walked, and Cory Thomas beat out a bunt to load the bases.
Skylar Prange then hit a line drive right at the second baseman, then the next batter popped up to the pitcher and the next batter struck out and that was the end of that rally.

Eakins had a single and double, Wilson had a single and two walks, and Thompson was on base on a walk and two fielder's choices.

The Highlanders finally got to Thomas in the ninth inning with a double, walk and two singles to score their runs.

Bowman said. "We played a good game defensively, and had a good game pitching.
"Thomas pitched an excellent ball game. They hit him at the end when he was a little tired, but he was still throwing hard at the end." Thomas allowed eight hits, struck out 13 and walked one intentionally.

The Owls are 12-7 and will be home to Scottsburg today, then will play host to New Albany Jeffersonville Wednesday in the consolation bracket of the HHC tournament.
