Brownstown, Trinity lose in sectional tennis tournament

The rain finally subsided for the day as Brownstown Central and Trinity Lutheran tennis teams were able to get their sectional semifinal match in on Friday night at Seymour High School's tennis courts.

Unfortunately for the Braves and Cougars their seasons ended by two Scott County teams. Austin beat the Braves 4-1 and Scottsburg defeated the Cougars 4-1 to set up the Scott County finals this  morning at 10 a.m.
The Braves only win came at No. 3 singles where senior Montana Howell got past the Eagles Michelle Goodin 6-4, 6-4.

"We had some really close matches," Braves Coach Erik Stangland said. "We had a couple of good shots and just couldn't get the points when we needed them. They played hard and we had an ok season. We helped Brownstown win the all-sports trophy this year for the girls athletics, so that was nice.

"Hopefully next year we will come back and have a better season and a better record."

The only match to go three sets was No. 1 doubles, as the Eagles team of Brittany Nease and Brittany Logsdon won the first set 6-4 over Abbey Jungclaus and Toni Jaynes. The Braves duo bounced back and won the second set 6-3, but Austin won the third set 6-2.

"We are going to lose three seniors from this team," Stangland said. "Montana had a really good season and she has been at No. 3 singles for the most part of the season and she had the best record of anybody. On paper we seemed like an old team, but we had five freshmen.

"We had a few girls who sat out a year before playing this year. We have all those freshmen that makes things look good for the future. I am looking forward to next year and our girls will be a little more seasoned."

As for the Cougars they ended their season with only two wins this year, but coach Joan Nichols hopes to have some girls step up to replace the six seniors she is losing this year.

Their only win came at No. 3 singles where senior Kendall Lambring had a hard-fought match with  Amanda Munden. Lambring took the first set 7-6 with a 7-5 tiebreaker and won the second set 6-4.

"We had some competition today, and the girls played hard," Nichols said. "We had a few that were nervous and I think they played really well. Kelly had a short season with injuries, but she started to play better when she got back."

"We had a lot of injuries this year and all considering we did well. I think it was a learning experience for all of us and I had fun. The No. 1 doubles team did extremely well this year and they played together most of the season and they improved in each game."

In No. 1 doubles, the Warriors Katie Trueblood and Jerica Helton got by Brittany Tabeling and Lisbeth Klosterman 6-3, 6-4, and at No. 2 doubles, the Warriors Brooke Routh and Holly Stewart beat Shivani Patel and Bailey Lambring 6-1, 6-1.

"Me and Liz came out with a winning season," Tabeling said. "I have to say that it wasn't our best game of the year that we have played together, but I enjoyed it. I didn't know much about tennis when I came out and have never played it. I got more familiar with it and Liz helped me out quite a bit.

"I wasn't disappointed, but we have played better. We didn't give up, and I am glad that I came out for tennis."

The Warriors defeated the Eagles 4-1 earlier this year, but the Eagles are hoping to have a repeat performance from last year when they won their first ever sectional crown.
