Owls miss scoring chances, lost to Bulldogs in HHC baaseball tournament

Seymour's baseball game against New Albany Friday night was one of missed opportunities for the Owls.
The Owls loaded the bases in the third, fourth and seventh innings with just one out. They did manage to get two runners home in the third and seventh innings, but stranded runners in every inning except the sixth, and left 11 on for the game, and lost 8-4 in the loser's bracket of the Hoosier Hills Conference tournament.
Seymour will play host to Madison today at 11 a.m. in the tournament, with a second regular season game to follow. Columbus East beat Madison 2-1 Friday night.
Seymour lost to Floyd Central 2-0 earlier in the week in the first round of the tournament, and Owls coach Bob Bowman said in both games it was a matter of not taking advantage of scoring opportunities.
"We had bases loaded in three innings with out (Friday night)," Bowman said. "The one inning we had the bases loaded we scored two runs before that, but we still had chances to break it open with a base hit but couldn't do it. If we would have gotten a hit in each of those innings the game would have been tied or we could have been ahead."
A.J. Beach led off the third inning with a single. With one out Reagan Eakins singled, and Cody Frische and Trevor Thompson followed with singles to drive in Beach and Eakins for a 2-0 lead. Jesse Wilson singled to load the bases but the Owls couldn't get any more runs as two strike outs ended the rally.
The Bulldogs used a hit batsman, single, walk and another single in the top of the fourth to tie the game.
In the bottom of the fourth, Beach singled, Noah Wahl walked and Eakins singled, but a pop out and ground out kept the Owls from scoring.
Travis Sanders hit a two-run home run in the fifth to put the Bulldogs up 4-2, and the visitors used three hits, a walk, a stolen base and an error to score four times in the top of the seventh.
Frische led off the bottom of the seventh by getting hit by a pitch, and Thompson followed with a walk. Cory Thomas singled to load the bases, and Cameron Phelps singled to drive in Frische and Thompson but that was the end of the scoring for the Owls.
The Owls finished with 11 hits with Wilson, Wahl and Beach each getting two.
Bowman said players in different positions in the batting order couldn't come up with hits in the clutch. "It's not one or two people, it is everybody that can't take adversity, that can't go up there and get us a hit with guys in scoring position. We had 11 hits tonight. That's enough to win a ballgame."
The Owls are 13-8.
