Lady Owls soccer team blanks Madison; sectional pairings announced
Comments 0 | Recommend 0
The Seymour Lady Owls soccer team scored two goals in the second half to break open a defensive battle and defeat Madison 3-0 in a Hoosier Hills Conference match Monday night at C.B. Hess Memorial Field.
The ball stayed at Seymour's end of the field throughout the game as the Owls had 24 shots to two for the Cubs in the first half, and outshot the visitors 28-2 in the second half.
"They were on goal, they were decent shots, but they just weren't hard enough," coach Kendra Hubbard said. "They just didn't have any power behind them. That was the biggest problem."
Heather Jones finally kicked the ball past the Madison goalie with 1:41 left in the first half for a 1-0 lead.
"We got them kind of settled down," Hubbard said. "I was afraid we weren't going to get a goal in the first half. We dominated. It was a keep-away game that we controlled the ball. We just needed harder shots."
Seymour made it 2-0 when Alli Reed scored at 16:49 of the second half, and Meredith Adams scored at 3:56.
"A couple of our outstanding players tonight were Bridgette (Jones) and Sam (Browning)., our sweeper and stopper," Hubbard said.
"They kind of came into it. Sam is really learning that position now, and has a lot better ball control. When the ball came out she contained it and got it to someone else."
The Lady Owls are 10-3-1 overall and 4-1 in the HHC.
Sectionals
The Seymour boys will battle Columbus East in the opening match of the Seymour boys sectional at 6 p.m. Oct. 18.
Trinity Lutheran will face Columbus North at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, and that match will be followed by Brown County facing the Seymour-East winner.
The Seymour girls have been assigned to the Columbus North Sectional, and they drew the bye in the seven-team tournament. Columbus North will play Jennings County at 6 p.m. Oct. 13. Seymour will play the winner of that match at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 16.
The Seymour girls have lost to both North (4-2) and to Jennings (5-1).
The Seymour boys tied East 0-0 earlier at Columbus.
Owls coach Wil Smith said, "East is going to be tough, and we've got to match their intensity because East is always intense. They always have several quick players. Our defense has to hold strong like it has all year.
"We've got to get some real good play in the midfield., winning 50-50 balls, and we've got to finish. We've got to get a few shots and we've got to put them in."
The Owls are 7-4-1 and will play host to Columbus North tonight at Freeman Field for senior night.
Smith said the players that were injured earlier are healthy. "Things look okay right now."
After tonight, the Owls will travel to Bedford Thursday, and will make up a match Oct. 7 at Floyd Central before beginning sectional play.
Hubbard said the Lady Owls are going need a better effort against either North or Jennings than when they played them earlier.
"We have a challenge to meet," she said. "We seem to be improving every game on a lot of things we've been working on, so we're hoping it all comes together during the sectional. That is what it is going to take. We're going to have a tough game Thursday night against East and that will kind of give us an idea of where we are. We didn't have Bridgette during the Columbus North game, and our defense was still kind of unsettled."
Trinity is 8-2-2 and does not play Columbus North during the season.
Trinity's match today at Rock Creek Christian has been canceled. The Cougars will play Thursday at Christian Academy of Indiana.
