Seymour softball team blanks Columbus East; sectional pairings set

COLUMBUS -  Seymour scored single runs in the first, fifth and seventh innings to defeat Columbus East  3-0 Friday in the Hoosier Hills Conference Softball Tournament.


"We hit the ball decent," coach Dennis Sutton said. "We had hits with runners on base."


The Owls took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Sarah Kleber doubled, and courtesy runner Jacelyn Chaisson scored on a ground out by Suzanne Lush.


Bridgette Jones doubled in the fifth to drive in Gabby Roger, and in the seventh Alicia Weaver singled and later scored on an error.


Liz Schooler went the distance on the mound to pick up the win. She allowed two hits, struck out four and walked three.


Seymour is 2-11 and both wins have come over East.


Seymour will play Bedford North Lawrence at 11 a.m. today at Kasting Park. BNL defeated  Madison 9-2 Friday night.

Sectional draw
The pairings for the sectionals have been announced, and Seymour will play Jennings County in the second game of the New Albany Sectional.


The sectionals will be played May 19-24. Tournament schedules will be announced by the host schools.
Seymour was defeated by Jennings County 11-3 earlier in the season.


The opening game at New Albany has the Bulldogs facing Bedford North Lawrence. Floyd Central and Jeffersonville drew the bye game.


Brownstown has been assigned to the Class 2A Clarksville Sectional and will play Clarksville in the opening game of the tournament at 5 p.m. May 19.


Austin will play Providence, and Paoli will face West Washington in games of May 20. Eastern drew the bye and will play the Brownstown-Clarksville winner on May 21

.
Clarksville defeated Brownstown 5-1 in a Mid-Southern game earlier in the season.


Crothersville and Trinity Lutheran will play in the opening game of the Springs Valley Sectional, with Orleans set to play Valley in the other game.


Crothersville defeated Trinity 13-1 early in the season as Tesia Baker pitched a no-hitter.
