Seymour wrestlers place 8th in opener

BEECH GROVE — Four Seymour wrestlers went 2-2 in the season opener Saturday at Beech Grove High School.
The Owls scored 74 points and placed eighth in the Capital City Classic.
“It’s a real tough opener,” Seymour coach Curt Schleibaum said.
The Owls only had three weeks of practice, and Schleibaum said, “To try to go up there and compete with that kind of competition, I’d say it’s one of the toughest in the state. But any experience on the mat is good experience.”
Perry Meridian, Beech Grove and Jeffersonville were the top three teams respectively after the first round. Perry Meridian, ranked third in the state in preseason polls, held its place after the third and final round with 249 points, but Beech Grove fell to fifth place (146.5) and Jeffersonville took second (176).
Warren Central moved from fourth place after one round to third at the end (170.5), followed by Columbus North (151), Beech Grove, Franklin Central (139.5), Bloomington North (103) and Seymour (74.)
Seymour junior Stephen Fleming had the Owls’ best finish, placing fourth in the 171 weight class. He was 2-2, including a second-round win over Columbus North’s Corey Bland in 51 seconds.
“Stephen had a great day, being the first meet of the year,” Schleibaum said. “I thought he wrestled very technically sound. I can’t wait to see him a little further into the year.”
Senior Kyle McCauley (160 division) and sophomores Benji Lloyd (125) and Eugene Vivelo (189) all finished fifth and went 2-2.
“As young as he is, I thought he had a really good day,” Schleibaum said of Lloyd. “Kyle, coming out of cross country and going 2-2 for us, he definitely had a good day. He’s had some rough days (at the Capital City Classic) before in the past. I think he’s starting to show more improvement and maturity in his wrestling, which he should be because he’s a senior.”
Seymour had to forfeit the 112, 130, 140 and 145 spots.
“I think we could get a couple guys in those spots” in the next meet, Schleibaum said. “We’re definitely a younger team, but we’ve got a lot of great kids. We have some room to improve. We’re looking forward to the season with the kids because they are great guys.”
The Owls will be back in action on Tuesday at Bloomington North.
“We filmed everything this weekend, and we’ll probably look at some film and make sure everybody’s on weight,” Schleibaum said of today’s practice. “We’ll work on details before we go out and wrestle.”
JV at Jennings County
NORTH VERNON — Five wrestlers represented Seymour at Saturday’s junior varsity tournament at Jennings County High School.
Junior Nick Banister at 171 and freshman Tyler Loud at heavyweight had strong showings by going 3-1 and placing second, while sophomore Clark Thompson was 2-2 for third place at 160.
Mitchell Reutter and Peyton Ault didn’t pick up wins, but Schleibaum said Reutter “looked good for a first-year wrestler, just need to work on some details” and Ault was coming off of an injury.
The JV team also will travel to Bloomington North on Tuesday.
