TERRE HAUTE — Franklin College’s offense struggled in the first half, while Rose-Hulman’s attack flourished most of the day, and the host Engineers emerged with a 34-21 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference football win on Saturday.

Rose-Hulman built up a 20-0 lead in the second quarter. Franklin was forced to punt the first six times it had the football and threw an interception at the end of the half.

The Grizzlies fought back after intermission, driving 80 yards on its first possession and scoring on a 58-yard pass from junior quarterback Nick Purichia to senior split end Adam Mellencamp, a graduate of Brownstown Central High School. The play marked the seventh straight game in which Mellencamp made a touchdown reception.

Rose-Hulman moved to 3-3 in the HCAC and 5-4 overall, while Franklin fell to 3-2 in the HCAC and 5-3 overall. The loss eliminated Franklin from being able to tie for a 2009 conference championship.

The Grizzlies close out their home schedule on Saturday when Manchester College visits on Senior Day. The HCAC matchup kicks off at 1:30 p.m.
