Bulldogs snap Tigers' win streak; Hornets lose at Cannelton

ORLEANS — Uncharacteristic.

That’s the best word to describe the Crothersville girls basketball team’s showing in Friday night’s game at Orleans. The Tigers’ energy level never seemed to arrive, while the Bulldogs took over from the second quarter on.

Crothersville’s five-game win streak was snapped after losing 56-42.

“Whenever they got ready to take the court, it just seemed like they were lifeless,” Tigers coach Kevin Hensley said. “There was no life in them at all. It’s frustrating because I tried to get the life back into them at halftime, and we come out for maybe 30 seconds and then the life just went away again.”

Both teams struggled to get things going in the first quarter, combining for 5 of 19 shooting, and the score was even at 9 at the end of one.

The Tigers’ only field goal of the second quarter was Brooke Prather’s 3-pointer at 6:13, giving her team a 12-9 lead. Crothersville then missed its final 10 attempts in the quarter.

Orleans’ Lauren Berning came alive in the second quarter, scoring nine of her team’s 12 points. Her third 3-pointer of the game at 2:51 gave her team a 16-12 lead and her field goal at 31 seconds made it 21-14. Crothersville’s Courtney Killey added a free throw in the final 15 seconds for a 21-15 score at the break.

Starters Kylie Hensley and Kayla Barnett were struck with two fouls apiece, which affected the Tigers’ offense. The Tigers also were called for 13 turnovers, with eight in the second quarter.

“I think when we lost Kylie to the bench and Kayla Barnett, it kind of took away from some of our offense,” Hensley said. “They gave us great defense, the girls that replaced them, but we’ve got to get their offense to Kylie and Kayla’s (level).”

To open the third quarter, Barnett sank a 3-pointer and Brooke Prather assisted Killey on a layup to make it 23-20, but Orleans scored five of the next eight points of the game. The Tigers went about six minutes without a field goal, and the Bulldogs surged ahead 40-25 after three.

In the fourth quarter, whenever Crothersville made a basket, Orleans had a response, and the Tigers couldn’t break past a 10-point deficit, despite Killey scoring 12 of her 15 points in the period.

“I finally told them, there at the last 5:57, now we have nothing to lose,” Hensley said. “We’ve got to get as aggressive as we can be, and the last 5:57, I thought we played better than them, the way we’ve been playing.
“They weren’t fighting through screens. They were trying to go around the girls instead of fighting through and bodying up to girls. It’s something we’re going to have to work on, get better defensively.”

Hensley scored all 12 of her points from 3-point land and Prather had 10 for the Tigers.
The Bulldogs were led by Berning’s 19 points.

Crothersville finished the game with 22 turnovers, compared to Orleans’ 13.

The Tigers (5-1) will travel to Waldron on Dec. 1.

“You try to win every ball game, but not very many teams win every ball game,” Hensley said. “You’re going to lose somewhere. Now, we’ve got something to work on next week before Thanksgiving. I told them to try to put this game behind them and just start focusing on the next game. We’re going to have bad nights, and now we’ve got to work on what we did wrong.”

Cannelton 71, Medora 41

CANNELTON — Cannelton jumped out to a 21-9 lead after one quarter on Friday and went on to defeat visiting Medora 71-41.

Medora had a 17-point third quarter, but Cannelton matched it.

The Hornets were led by Hannah Elkins’ 18 points, with 15 coming from the 3-point line. Mariah Campbell added 13 points, and Montana Wheeler reached double figures in rebounding for the second straight game, pulling down 16.

The Hornets (1-6) will play host to Lighthouse Christian at 4:30 p.m. today.
