Crothersville, Medora track teams place 3rd; County golf, baseball teams compete

At track meets on the road on Monday, Crothersville’s boys and girls teams placed third in a quad meet, while Medora was third in a three-way.

Also, Seymour and Trinity Lutheran’s golf teams competed at Shadowood Golf Course, and Seymour’s baseball team played at Franklin.

Crothersville

AUSTIN — The Crothersville boys scored 42 points behind Austin’s 87 and Henryville’s 72, while New Washington was fourth with 23.

Zach Elliott won the 800, and he set a personal record and was second in the high jump, clearing the 6-foot mark.

“Elliott had a huge PR in the high jump,” Tigers coach Carl Bowman said, adding that Elliott started at 5-4 on Monday and has been at 5-10 several times this spring. Henryville was first with 6-1. “That was really good for him to finally break out of that and go all the way to 6 feet.”

The Tigers were without three runners, including one that does both hurdles events. Eric Prewitt was second in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, and the 3,200 relay team was second.

The Lady Tigers had first-place finishes from Courtney Killey in the 300 hurdles and high jump. Kayla Barnett was second in the two sprint events, and the 3,200 relay team was second.

“Kayla Barnett had a PR in the 100-meter dash tonight,” Lady Tigers coach Cheryl Nehrt said. “The races were very fast tonight, and the girls did a nice job.”

On Thursday, Crothersville plays host to a quad meet with Trinity Lutheran, Medora and West Washington.

Medora

BORDEN — Medora’s boys team scored 19 points and the girls tallied 18, but both placed third.

Borden and West Washington finished first and second respectively in the boys and girls meets.

Tanner Bennett had the sole first-place finish, winning the 1,600-meter run and setting a personal record. Michael Powell had a PR in the 400 for second place, and Logan Farmer competed in high jump for the first time and went 5 feet for third place. Kyle Tharp was third in the 100 and fourth in the 200.

“They each had four events, and several of the boys set PRs and even tried some new events they’ve never done before,” Hornets coach Carly Lancaster said.

Hannah Elkins captured the blue ribbon in the 1,600, running it for the first time. She was third in the 100, 200 and long jump. Justice Dean was third in both long distance events, and Montana Wheeler was third in the shot put.

“A lot of the new events, they said it’s something they want to continue doing,” Lancaster said. “We had a successful night.”

Golf

Seymour, Trinity Lutheran

Seymour and Trinity Lutheran competed in separate matches at Shadowood Golf Course.

Seymour was second with 167, while Columbus East won with 159 and New Albany was third with 173.

Austin Felix led the Owls with a 4-over 40, Travis Thompson and Clayton Carr had 41s and Blake Murray and Luke Nolting had 45s.

“Three kids right there 40 to 41, so that’s pretty good,” Owls coach Brian Rodman said. “Blake is improving and showing a little bit more consistency, and it’s nice to see Clayton get his score down to a 41. He needed a confidence boost there.”

Trinity Lutheran suffered its second loss of the year. Salem won 163-188.

Sterling Long (45), Clayton Warren (46), Derrick Shelley (47) and Nate Benter (50) led the Cougars.

Both teams return to Shadowood today, with Seymour playing Bloomington South and Trinity playing Hauser.

Baseball

Franklin 3, Seymour 2

FRANKLIN — The Seymour baseball team lost its second straight game 3-2.

Franklin held a 3-0 lead before Seymour scored two. The Owls had runners at second and third, and they stole to move up base. Zach Brown had a hit, while Cody Frische and Jase Hunnicutt scored. But then Brown was tagged out at home, preventing the tying run.

“We didn’t hit the ball as well as in the past, but we didn’t have any errors and we had good pitching,” Owls coach Bob Bowman said. “Our pitcher (Connor Kirtley) only gave up six hits.”

Today, the Owls (7-8) travel to Bloomington South.
