Seymour tennis team tops Jennings County; Trinity loses

Seymour's tennis team swept the singles matches in straight sets and defeated Jennings County 4-1 Thursday at North Vernon.

Trinity Lutheran's junior varsity team lost 5-0 to Hanover Southwestern at Seymour High School.

At North Vernon, Chase Emerson, Mitch Hunnicutt and Cody Scamacca won their singles matches in straight sets, and Ben Fox and Aaron Beckort won at No. 2 doubles to  help the Owls improve their record to 3-1.

"We really did a good job tonight," coach Brad Emerson said. "Singles played well. Chase probably had the shot of the year. Jonathon Webster hit it over his head, and Chase ran back and slapped it between his legs and Webster missed the volley so Chase got the point. Usually you don't win those points, but it happened to go our way.

"No. 2 doubles played well. They kind of struggled a little bit in the second set. Jennings came back and gave them a match., but we ended up winning a tie-breaker, so all-in-all it was a good, positive night for us. The guys played outstanding."

Emerson said he was hoping for this kind of a start to the season. "I can't complain. I wasn't sure at the beginning of the season where we would stand, but I'm real happy with the 3-1 record at this point. Tuesday we have a real tough opponent down at Jeffersonville. That will be a good test for us."

Seymour's junior varsity will face Silver Creek, Floyd Central, and New Albany Saturday at Silver Creek, beginning at 9 a.m.

"It gives our team a chance to play against good, quality opponents," Emerson said.

At SHS,  Trinity's Evan Behmlander won five games at No. 2 singles, Andrew Bloch and Matt Mellencamp  won five games in the second set, and Carl Warnock won his reserve match.

Coach Tony Nehrt said, "It is exciting to see the boy's improvement as they face teams with more experience.
"They are starting to adjust to the challenges of playing a real match where every point matters. They are starting to identify areas that they personally need  to improve, and that is a big step to improving their games."
