Braves win season tennis opener
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Brownstown golfers third
Brownstown Central's tennis team opened its season Tuesday with a 4-1 victory at Charlestown.
Seymour lost 4-1 to Jeffersonville at home, while Trinity Lutheran lost 4-1 at Hanover Southwestern.
Brownstown won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles in straight sets, and at No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles in three sets to get their season off on the right foot.
Coach Erik Stangland said Abby Jungclaus played the steadiest match for the Braves by winning 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.
"Both teams started out tentative," Stangland said. "We looked pretty good in three of the matches and they looked pretty good in the other two. Playing three three-setters was awful difficult."
Kelsey Black and Rachel Haskett picked up Seymour's point at No. 1 doubles with a 6-3, 6-1 win.
Seymour's Miranda Caudill and Brittany White lost in three sets at No. 2 doubles.
"Our No. 1 doubles played real well," coach Brad Emerson said. "No. 2 doubles got to three sets so they did a good job.
Brittany Pottschmidt won Trinity's point with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles.
"Most of the girls had a slow start, and the cold and the win were definitely factors," Trinity coach Joan Nichols said. "The second sets were definitely more competitive."\
BC golfers third
Brownstown Central shot 178 to place third Tuesday at Bloomington Country Club.
Bloomington South shot 157 and Columbus North 178.
Jacob Olson was low for BC with 40.
Coach Ron Slaton said, "Our kids stepped up and played pretty well. Olson had a good round and (Zach) Pranger had a good round (42). They were pretty positive."
