After a two-game hiatus, the Seymour volleyball team got senior Kristin Turner back in the lineup and then used that motivation to defeat Franklin 25-11, 25-14, 25-17 at home Saturday afternoon.
"It was really good to have Kristin Turner back," Owls coach Angie Lucas said. "She's been out with an injury and putting her back in the lineup was huge for us. She played in the first two games then we sat her out in the third game. Overall I was extremely pleased with our play today."
In the first game, the Owls jumped out to a 4-2 lead and then increased that lead to 7-2 on good team serving and timely hitting. The Grizzly Cubs got no closer than 10 points as the Owls cruised to the easy win.
The second game was much the same for the Owls as they jumped to a 4-1 lead behind Turner. Alex Carmichael made it a 7-3 contest with back-to-back service aces. Carmichael again came up big as she served five straight points to give the Owls a 21-10 lead. Carmichael finished the day 15 of 17 serving with four aces.
"We played really well at the net, and their passing was very good," Lucas said. "When our back row plays good then we can make great things happen. I thought our whole play today was very aggressive and Emily Krumme is playing the offense really well for us."
Krumme was 89 of 90 setting with 30 assists and Chelsea Hendrix had 11 defensive digs. Chelsea Reinhart was 33 of 35 hitting with eight kills and Turner was 23 of 25 with five kills.
The third game was much different for the Owls with Turner on the bench and the Grizzly Cubs took advantage of that by taking an early 7-3 lead. The Owls then scored four straight points, gave up a point, then scored another one to tie the score at 8-8. After both teams exchanged points to tie the score at 11-11, Jessica Taskey took over by scoring six consecutive points for the Owls and gave them the lead for good.
Taskey knocked down an ace and Reinhart added two kills in that sequence and the Owls were up 17-11.
"We came out a little too relaxed in that third game," Lucas said. "We are very pleased with the way we are playing right now. We are clicking, coming together, and are peaking at the right time. We are one more win away from our goal of 20."
Reinhart was 13 of 14 serving with one ace and Taskey was 6 of 7 with an ace. As a team the Owls were 55 of 63 serving. The Owls were 108 of 124 hitting with 33 kills and Carmichael was 18 of 22 with three kills, and Erin Murphy was 18 of 22 with 10 kills.
The Owls moved to 19-11 on the year and they will honor their six seniors tonight when they play Jeffersonville.
