South soccer team tops Seymour; Trinity wins

Bloomington South's boys soccer team scored a goal with 9:12 remaining in the second half  to break a tie and edge Seymour 2-1 Saturday afternoon at C.B. Hess Memorial Field.

Players from both teams became aggressive, and the play became physical with players from both teams receiving yellow cards.

That was the kind of match Owls coach Wil Smith said he expected. "I pretty much knew coming in it would be a game like this. Bloomington South is good every year. I'm not sure they thought we would be quite as good.
"This was a jammin game. It was up-and-down and the ‘tackles' were hard. I would have hoped that we could have come out ahead. We've got the team to do that this year.

The Owls took a 1-0 lead when Reid Martin scored off an assist from Devon Moore at 27:03 of the first half.
Later in the first half, another Seymour player had a shot hit off the post. Smith said, "I actually thought that ball was going in all the way. It just dinked off the far post."

The Panthers tied the score with a goal at 31:24 of the second half

Smith said his team needs to become healthy. "We've got some injuries. We've got the walking wounded over here today. Once Aaron Brown was taken out that put a squeeze on our defense. When you're playing against players like Bloomington South's quick players you've got to have somebody that can hang with them., you've got to have several players that can hang with them.

"If we would have had our starting four back there everything would have been fine." Smith said as Brown became injured late in the first half. "When you start mixing and matching because of injuries that's the way it goes.

"Don't take anything away from our play today. They worked and worked."
The Owls are 3-2-1 and will travel to New Albany Thursday for a Hoosier Hills match

Cougars win

Trinity Lutheran scored two goals in the first half and went on to whip Scottsburg 5-0 Friday afternoon.
Zach Flinn opened the scoring with an unassisted goal 10 minutes in. Two minutes later David Beabout scored on a pass from Bradley Tabeling.

Flinn added two goals and Tabeling one goal as the Cougars improved to 3-0-2 for the season.
Coach Dan Sievert said, "I couldn't be more pleased with the effort and play of the Cougars tonight.  The short, controlled passes and great movement opened up some great scoring chances, with five of the 12 recorded shots finding the net.

"Sophomore goalie Chad VanLiew played an excellent game and deserved the shutout.  He made several saves that were college caliber.  He has the knack of being in the right place at the right time, and his reaction time is simply unreal."

"Flinn had an amazing game at center midfield, scoring three goals and one assist.  He was one step ahead the entire night, controlling the midfield and creating offensive momentum each time he received the ball."
The Cougars will be home to Oldenburg Academy at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
