Trinity, Brownstown post volleyball wins
Comments 0 | Recommend 0For a wedding anniversary, most people like to have certain things from their loved one, but on this particular night, Trinity Lutheran volleyball coach Sara Clark wanted something from her team.
The one thing she wanted was to get a win over West Washington. Her wish was granted as the Cougars picked up the 25-17, 25-19, 25-22 win over the Senators and upped their record to 8-7 on the year.
"We have been working a lot more on our net play," Clark said. "I think we are to the point where we are executing our offense like we should. Our defense is weak and we are still leaving some holes, but not near as many as we were."
"We have improved a lot from the beginning of the season and we have come a long way.
In the first game, the Cougars got off to a slow start as both teams struggled on the offensive side before Kendall Lambring scored two points for a 9-6 lead.
The Cougars led 10-8, but the Senators scored four points to lead 12-10. Sarah Onken then gave the Cougars a 13-12 lead, but the Senators answered back with a point of their own to tie the score at 13-13.
After the Cougars scored their 14th point on a kill, Emilee Newkirk was the catalyst they were looking for. She scored six straight points to put the Cougars up for good. Dakota Richart scored the final three points for the Cougars.
Richart led the Cougars in serving for the game by going a perfect 13 of 13 with one ace. Newkirk was 10 of 13 with four aces.
"I am proud of the girls," Clark said. "Our goal tonight was to come out and win in three games and we wanted the junior varsity to finish in two games."
Both teams battled hard in the second game, but freshmen Sam Stuckwisch and Onken kept the Cougars in the game with a few timely kills. Newkirk also had several saves to help the Cougars win.
The Cougars started the third game like the first by struggling to score any offensive points. The Senators led 3-1 on an ace, but Newkirk tied the score at 3-3 with two service points.
The Cougars managed a 9-6 lead, but the Senators scored four straight points to lead 10-9. Stuckwisch added four points for the Cougars to give them a 13-10 lead. The score was tied one last time at 14-14, before the Cougars slowly pulled away.
"A lot of the girls were hitting well," Clark said. "The one thing I did notice was that Alexis White was putting up
some nice blocks. We need to practice more on passing at the net. Newkirk sets the ball and plays defense well."
"These girls practice so hard and it's showing."
The Cougars finished the game with 34 attack kills, as Lambring recorded 10, White had nine, and Onken had eight. Stuckwisch was the leading setter with 25 assists.
The Cougars will play host to Bedford North Lawrence on Monday night.
