Seymour volleyball team posts 20th win of season

One of the goals Seymour volleyball coach Angie Lucas set for her team at the beginning of the season was to win 20 matches.
The Owls reached that goal Monday night with a 25-17, 25-9, 25-9 win over Jeffersonville on Senior Night in the Lloyd E. Scott Gymnasium.
After seniors Chelsea Hendrix, Moriah Hendrix, Rachel Joray, Emily Krumme, Kristen Turner and Jessica Taskey received balloons from other members of the team, they started the first game, and played throughout the match.
"That was very exciting, and a very good win for us," Lucas said. "We wanted 20 wins for the season. That is quite an accomplishment for this group of girls when last year we had 12 wins. They've come along way and really did a good job tonight.
"I'm real proud of the seniors. They've been with us for four years and their families have been with us for four years, and it's a pretty special moment for each of them."
The Owls may have had thoughts of the pre-match festivities on their minds when the first game started as Jeff jumped on top 3-0. The Owls charged back to tie the game at 4-4, and increased a 15-13 lead to 20-14, and scored game point on a Jeff tipping error.
Seymour scored the first points in the second and third games, and used aggressive serving to pull away.
In the second game, Alex Carmichael had a kill to give her team a 4-2 lead, a tip to make it 7-4, and an ace for an 8-4 score.
Three straight points by Erin Murphy gave the Owls a 15-6 lead, an ace by Chelsea Reinhart made it 22-7, and game point came on an attack error.
In the third game, Murphy served an ace for a 10-2 lead, a kill by Carmichael made it 18-8, and an ace by Turner put the Owls on top 24-8.
This is the second time the Owls have beaten the Red Devils this season, and Lucas said she wanted her team to come out strong since they will play in the second match next Thursday in the Bedford North Lawrence Sectional.
"It's really important to not hold back right now," Lucas said. "We want to be playing our best and I think we are. We pretty much controlled the match. Our serving was aggressive, the play at the net was aggressive. That's what we wanted to show them. We feel like we have an edge walking in (to the sectional).
"It's always hard to play a team three times, but we feel like we're playing so well right now that we feel very confident about next Thursday and that's good because that's what we need to be in order to advance. We need to be confident and tonight helped us a great deal,"
The Owls, 20-11, will close out their regular season Thursday at Columbus North.
Other matches
Medora lost in four games to South Decatur at home Monday.

Medora coach Kristina Beesley said her team played well at times. "We came out strong at the start of the first game and played so well. In the second game we played well, but then in the third game we had a lot of passing errors, and we had more passing errors in the fourth game. We don't have any subs and South Decatur was hitting it to where we were having trouble passing. Our setter was running all over the place.
"We improved our serving."
Medora is 2-16 and will travel to Bloomington Lighthouse Friday night.
Trinity is 18-12 and will close out its regular season tonight when it plays host to Henryville.
