MEDORA - Crothers-ville's volleyball team used late charges in all three games to defeat Medora 25-17, 25-12, 25-15 Thursday night.
The Hornets stayed with the Tigers the first part of the first game, trailing only 14-11 following a serve by Jetta Baird. The Tigers then used a string of seven points to lead 21-11 and then closed out the game.
Medora held a 5-3 lead early in the second game before Crothersville moved in front 8-6, then increased its lead to 11-8, then 17-11 and scored the game point on a tip by Courtney Killey.
In the third game, the Tigers moved on top 9-1 on an ace serve by Coleigh King, and later led 19-7 and coasted.
"We talked about playing to our level and not the other teams' level, but I knew coming into tonight would be a real struggle," CHS coach Zabrina Nicholson said. "They played like they did in practice and kind of goofed around."
Crothersville is 6-1 with that loss coming against Orleans. Nicholson recalled, "We took the first game and did a really great job. Then just kind of laid down. Our serve receive has improved dramatically, so we're ready to face them again."
Medora coach Kristina Beesley also talked about how her team has improved its serve reception. "We did a lot better on receiving the ball. Some of our passes were off, but a lot of the girls have been working hard on their passing. While some of the passes still weren't perfect, they were better.
"We didn't miss that many serves. We've really tried to improve on our serving. We only hit a few balls into the net. They weren't strong hitting tonight as far as kills. I think they tried to compensate for the blocking with Amber Lucas. They stopped swinging instead of swinging all the way through and that forced some errors on us."
Beesley changed the Hornets' rotation before last Thursday's match against Paoli. She said she changed back to the old rotation for the first game against the Tigers and admitted that threw her team off, so she changed back to the new rotation for the last two games, and her team played better.
"Our serving has improved and transition on and off the net has been better. We just didn't do a lot of the little things, and we made more mistakes than Crothersville did."
The Hornets, 0-7, will play host to Pekin Eastern at 6 p.m. today, then will play in the Orleans Tournament Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m.
The Tigers will be home to Austin Tuesday night.
