Seymour High School baseball head coach Jeremy Richey, center, talks to his team before the start of this past spring's Hoosier Hills Conference Tournament championship game at Jeffersonville.

"Just a little bit more hard work can equal that much more fun.”

Tanner Belcher said those inspirational words were often spoken this past spring by first-year Seymour High School baseball head coach Jeremy Richey.

“It was a lot more fun,” Belcher said of the Owls going 21-5 and finishing as runners-up in the Hoosier Hills Conference and sectional. “(Richey) is always honest. He was on everybody; he didn’t care who you were. If you were there and you were playing a position right, you were going to play.”

Belcher said he was just fine with Richey’s honesty.

“He’s a great coach of baseball, and I think he did great,” Belcher said. “He’s always got something to say on how you’re doing something and always working with you. He’s always getting on me, which I like, which means he cares.”

Belcher, who wrapped up his junior year in the spring, said it didn’t surprise him when he learned Richey is one of nearly a dozen nominated as 2012 Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association coach of the year.
