'Well Deserved': Former Brownstown football, track coach inducted into school's Athletic Hall of Fame

BROWNSTOWN

As Larry Hinkle walked around the Brownstown Central High School gymnasium during Friday night’s county rivalry boys basketball game against Seymour, he was greeted by several former students, athletes and co-workers.

Each of them were congratulating him for being inducted into the BCHS Athletic Hall of Fame that night, and several recalled memories of having him as a teacher, a coach or both.

“He was the best coach I ever played for,” said Tony Cockerham, who had Hinkle as a coach in football and track and field. “Tremendous motivator, made it fun, very successful. If you did it his way, you were awfully hard to beat.”

Hinkle taught social studies at BCHS for 42 years, and Cockerham also had him as a teacher.

“He was a teacher both ways,” Cockerham said. “He was an excellent teacher in the classroom, and an excellent teacher in sports, and an excellent teacher in life. He’s one of the finest people I’ve ever known.”

Dave Warren, a 1976 BCHS graduate, played football when Hinkle was the offensive backs coach. Warren was the quarterback.
