A southern Indiana man sustained possible life-threatening injuries in a wreck that left six others injured Saturday evening on Interstate 65 about three miles south of Seymour, police report said.

Frances Wilkey, 64, of Warrick County was listed in serious condition Sunday afternoon at University of Louisville Hospital.

State Trooper Matt Holley said in a news release that Wilkey was a passenger in a 2008 Dodge Caravan driven by Becky Freimiller, also of Warrick County. Wilkey was trapped in the vehicle for 30 minutes before emergency personnel could free him. Freimiller sustained severe cuts and trauma to the face and a possible concussion.

Five others passengers in the van, also from Warrick County, were injured in the wreck, reported at about 6:30 p.m. They are Jessica Evans, 19, who sustained serious head injuries; Laura Wilkey, 43, who sustained possible broken bones; and Donna Evans, 53, Tina Whitaker, 50, and Miranda Garrett, 14, who all sustained cuts and bruises in the wreck. The conditions of the others passengers weren’t available at press time Sunday.

Holley said the seven were injured when the 2008 Dodge Caravan was struck by a large tire that came across the median and hit the windshield of the vehicle Freimiller was driving south near the 47-mile marker.

Holley said Freimiller lost control of the van, which went into the median and struck the barrier cable before launching over that barrier into the northbound lanes of Interstate 65. A 2011 Freightliner semi tractor-trailer rig driven by Anthony Green, 36, of Woodruff, S.C., then sideswiped the van causing heavy front-end damage to the van.

Green was uninjured.

State troopers and officers with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department searched the area for the vehicle that lost the tire. Police believe it came from a trailer of a large vehicle. Anyone with information regarding the vehicle should contact the Indiana State Police, Versailles District, at 812-689-5000. The crash remains under investigation.
