A fund started more than 60 years ago by World War II veterans to provide food for area families at Christmas received its first infusion of cash more than a week before its official kickoff.
The 68th annual Christmas Basket Fund, sponsored by American Legion Post 89 in partnership with The Tribune, was started for those in need in Seymour but was expanded later to include the rest of the county.
The first donation for this year’s drive, a $250 check, came from Jackson Lodge 146, Free & Accepted Masons, on Nov. 19. The lodge in recent years generally has been the first donor to the fund, which kicks off Thanksgiving Day.
