Belief goes a long way for Trinity Lutheran

Throughout the season, coach Mike Lang and his staff have tried to instill belief in his players.

“1-2-3, believe.”

That’s how the Trinity Lutheran High School girls basketball team broke down the huddle before the start of Saturday’s championship game of the Class A Sectional 61 at Springs Valley against West Washington.

The game ended up going into overtime when Trinity’s Haley Couch made a 3-pointer in the closing seconds of regulation.

With 54 seconds remaining in the first overtime and Trinity leading 61-58, the Cougar faithful began chanting “I believe that we will win.”

West Washington’s Shelby Springer made a layup at the end of the first overtime to force another four minutes, but Trinity was strong down the stretch and made free throws for a 72-66 win for the school’s first girls basketball sectional title.

“That’s been our theme, our motto all year, is to believe,” senior Hannah Barker said. “And now, when we believe we can do it, we can win. That (crowd’s chant) really pumped us up. That got us going. I think the crowd really helped us. We have to play for a full 32 minutes, and when we do, we will win.”
