Brownstown native earns volleyball preseason honor

Marshall University senior Sammie Bane is one of 13 girls on the 2014 Conference USA volleyball preseason team.

The Brownstown native earned Conference USA second-team honors last year as a junior. That season, the 5-foot-4 setter ranked fourth in the conference for assists (10.63 per set) and earned all-academic honors.

Out of 13 conference teams, Marshall is eighth in the preseason poll. Defending Conference USA regular-season and tournament champion University of Texas at San Antonio is ranked No. 1 in the poll, while newcomer Western Kentucky University is second.

Bane was a two-time Conference USA Setter of the Week winner in 2013, earning the accolade four times in her career with the Thundering Herd. She is currently fourth in the Marshall record books with 3,663 career assists.

Bane has started in every match during her time at Marshall except for one during her freshman year.

Marshall will begin its 2014 season hosting the Thunder Invitational on Aug. 29 and 30.
