Column: Be advocate for child in need, create happy ending for all

Please join me in recognizing that we each can speak up for children and promote the social and emotional well-being of children and families in our community, not just because April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month but because we need to protect our children.

Every day in this country, 1,900 children become victims of abuse or neglect. And every day four of them will die.

According to the Indiana Department of Child Services in Jackson County, there are 147 open cases regarding child abuse and neglect, and last year more than 1,771 total reports were filed.

We encourage you to consider being a guardian ad litem or court-appointed special advocate in order to be a voice to the court system for the best interest of a child. The focus of the CASA program is to find a safe, permanent, loving home for the child.
