Column: Community key element for modern day church survial

As churches throughout the Seymour area gather this Thanksgiving to offer their gratitude to God, their view is not just to the successes of the past but to the challenges of the future.

The church in America is going through unprecedented change. The Barna Group, a Christian survey service, notes that while 60 percent of senior Christians state they worship on a regular basis at a local church, only 3 percent of young adults do the same. The remaining U.S. Christian population attends somewhere between 11 percent to 30 percent, which is a steady decline from previous generations.

Our churches are graying. Pastors and church leaders alike know that change is upon us.
