Column: Innocent actions can affect waterways



With summer upon us, it’s time to turn our attention to things we can’t do in the winter months that can impact our environment in ways we might not realize.

I’m sure everybody has noticed the drain gratings located along our curbs, in the roads and at various locations all over town. These drains are connected to either our sewer system, which leads to the wastewater treatment plant, or they may be connected to the stormwater collection system that leads directly to the closest creeks, ditches or rivers.

These drains are designed to collect rain water only. Whatever goes down these storm drains could end up being directly discharged into the creek without treatment of any kind.
