Column: Veterans earn respect of all for service


“It’s embarrassing.”

That’s how Melvin M. Weddell described the attention paid to him and six other World War II veterans who gathered May 18 for a dedication ceremony of a new veterans memorial.

Friends, family and neighbors applauded them when introduced.

“Why wouldn’t we honor them?” Evelyn Darkis of Medora asked before the dedication program.
