Thumbs-up to Ann and Wilbur Lee Hoevener of Tampico and their big pink tractor. The Jackson County family uses the 1949 Farmall Super M tractor to raise awareness of all types of cancer, not just breast cancer. The Hoeveners’ daughter, Lisa, died from a rare type of liver cancer at age 25 in 1997. The Hoeveners exhibit their tractor at the Jackson County Fair and ride in parades near and far to raise awareness of the fight against cancer and to keep the memory of their daughter alive.

Thumbs-up to Seymour High School government teacher Dave Urbanski and his students for their work organizing and staging a candidates forum in the District 69 state representative election. The forum was staged at the high school and allowed area residents to hear Democrat Jim McCormick and Republican Jim Lucas, both of Seymour, share their views on issues facing Hoosiers.

Thumbs-up to the quick actions of family members, fellow workers and first responders who helped free Russell “Junior” Bundy Jr. from a harrowing situation inside a grain bin at Bundy Brothers & Sons Inc. in Vallonia. Fast thinking and swift action likely combined to help save the life of Bundy.

Thumbs-up to organizers and volunteers of the annual Log Cabin Day at Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge. The event offers a glimpse into the pioneer days of life in the area where the Louis and Nancy Myers family built a two-room cabin in the late 1800s. The event draws people from around the region, including students from area schools, and helps preserve the refuge’s past while raising money for its current and future needs.

Thumbs-up to organizers and volunteers who help plan and stage Fort Vallonia Days. The annual fall festival in Vallonia serves as a community homecoming, celebrates and preserves the area’s pioneer past that dates to the late 1700s and helps raise funds for a number of community projects. It’s a unique gathering in the area, featuring tomahawk throwing, muzzleloader shooting, yarn spinning and

blacksmithing.
