County road work bid under budget

BROWNSTOWN

Jackson County commissioners put a plan in place Tuesday that will allow for the repaving of at least 16.13 miles of the county’s 738 miles of streets or roads.

Two companies, Dave O’Mara Paving Inc. of North Vernon and Milestone Paving LP of Columbus, submitted bids for the work. O’Mara won the contract by submitting bids that were nearly $80,000 less than the $1 million the county had set aside for the work.

The savings will allow the county to add to the length of some of the 13 projects or add a new project in each of the three county commissioners’ districts, county highway superintendent Warren Martin said after the meeting.

Estimating repaving costs is difficult, Martin said, and he was not surprised at O’Mara’s bid of $920,713.15.
