Thirty-four more third-graders in Jackson County passed the IREAD3 after taking the exam a second time this summer.
But 71 still have not passed the state reading test that determines whether they are reading well enough to move on to fourth grade, according to results recently released by the Indiana Department of Education.
That number is down from more than 100 who failed the test last spring.
Many of those students who did not pass, however, have received a good-cause exemption from the state because they are in special education or English Language Learning programs or already have been held back twice.
