Data: Farming more concentrated

Preliminary results of the 2012 Census of Agriculture reveal the number of farms across the U.S. declined but that they grew in size during a five-year period.

In 2007, there were 2,204,792 farms in the U.S., down 4 percent in 2012 to 2,109,363.

“I suspect that trend will hold true for Jackson County also,” said Richard Beckort, Jackson County Purdue Extension director. “People are retiring out of the farm industry.”
