Column: Disability Awareness Month offers chance to open others’ eyes, hearts



Did you know at any given time nearly 19 percent of the U.S. population has a disability, according to the U.S. Census Bureau 2010, which includes temporary disabilities like a broken leg?

For Jackson County that means more than 8,000 residents have a disability at any given time.

This week wraps up Disability Awareness Month, and for many people this awareness month seems to receive little attention. It could be because people are unaware of it or feel education in regards to disability does not apply to them.
