When putting a doubles team together in tennis, it’s all about the right fit.
Brownstown Central High School boys coach Ron Slaton remembers pairing Skylar Thompson and Skylar Luedeman in exhibition doubles when they were sophomores.
“They just kind of fit together,” Slaton said. “One’s right-handed, and one’s left-handed. One’s quick and fast, and one’s tall and has a huge reach. I thought, ‘Well, maybe this will work,’ and it did.”
As juniors, Thompson and Luedeman finished with a 19-4 record at No. 2 doubles. Slaton considered breaking them up as seniors this fall and having them play singles, but they ended up staying together. The Braves lost in the sectional semifinals, but Thompson and Luedeman advanced to play one more match before losing and finishing with a 16-5 record.
