Robert Riggs of Brownstown continued a tradition Tuesday — casting an early ballot.

He has used the absentee balloting center at the courthouse in Brownstown to vote early for several years now for one simple reason.

“I just like voting early,” the 80-year-old said Tuesday morning after becoming one of the first people in the county to cast a ballot for the Nov. 6 general election.

This year, however, Riggs has a good reason for voting early.

“I’m having hip surgery on Nov. 6,” he said.

The absentee, or early polling, site opened at 8 a.m. Tuesday, and by 10 a.m. Riggs and about 20 others had cast ballots, county Clerk Amanda Cunningham Lowery said.

“It’s been pretty steady,” Lowery said.

By the end of day, 62 early votes had been cast.
