No one is arguing with Sen. Dan Coats’ conclusion that the federal budget passed by the Senate just before Christmas fails to get the nation’s finances where they need to be.
Still, it’s the best deal we’ve seen in years. Thankfully, the Indiana Republican’s vote did not derail the bipartisan budget agreement that avoids the specter of another government shutdown in January.
The $1.012 trillion budget is no “grand bargain” needed for deficit reduction, but at least it does not inflict further harm as Congress’ fiscal brinkmanship has done in the recent past.
