Editorial: Ivy Tech finances have large effect

Members of the Board of Trustees for the statewide Ivy Tech Community College system faced an unpleasant task in recent weeks, voting on a proposal whereby tuition costs could be raised as much as 18 percent over the next two years.

Present and future students and their families face an even more unpleasant situation — paying incremental increases over the next two years that could total as much as an additional $20 per credit hour.

Increases in tuition for post-secondary education are a familiar burden for most college students and their families, but this large hike at Ivy Tech is particularly onerous given that the institution has been hailed for its low-cost course offerings.
