Editorial: North Vernon police officer a fine ‘doc’

Police are trained to serve and protect. North Vernon Police Department Sgt. Keith Messer delivered — literally — on both accounts Feb. 25 when he helped a baby boy enter the world.

The 11-year department veteran responded at 12:15 a.m. to a 911 call from a woman, Katie Skelton, who said she was going into labor.

When Messer arrived, her water already had broken and her contractions were just a few minutes apart. The baby was on its way, Skelton assured him. She was a pro at this — it was her third delivery.
