Editorial: Philharmonic youth outreach enriching

Rare is the community in this age of tightened educational budgets where young people can be provided with an appreciation of orchestral music that will remain with many of them throughout their lives.

Schools across the country have been forced to relegate music programs to second-class status in many instances and to no status at all in others because of declines in funding and the push to focus more on career-sensitive lesson plans.

Fortunately, in this region several organizations have stepped forward to arrest that trend.
