State and local officials dispute federal statistics that show unemployment rates on the rise while the number of employed Hoosiers increases.

Under those disputed numbers, Jackson County’s unemployment rate climbed to its highest level in a year and a half in January, despite adding 208 people to those employed.

Jackson County’s jobless rate increased to 8.2 percent in January from December’s 7.4 percent revised rate, according to figures released Monday by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.
