Girls basketball teams learn postseason matchups

Tribune staff reports

As the Indiana high school girls basketball season enters the final week of the regular season, teams learned where their postseason journeys will begin when the sectional pairings were announced Sunday.

Two of the three Jackson County teams playing in the Class A Sectional 61 at Orleans received byes. Defending champion Trinity Lutheran will meet the winner of the Crothersville-Orleans game, while Medora will battle the Springs Valley-West Washington winner.

Against sectional opponents during the season, Trinity was 3-1, losing to West Washington by one point and not playing Springs Valley; Crothersville was 2-3, beating Medora twice and not playing Springs Valley; and Medora lost to the other sectional teams.

Brownstown Central plays in a loaded Class 3A Sectional 30 at Charlestown. Six of the eight teams have winning records.

Brownstown will play Charlestown in the first round. The other in the sectional matchups are Scottsburg versus North Harrison, Salem versus Silver Creek and No. 5 Madison versus last year’s sectional winner, Corydon Central.

So far this season, Brownstown defeated North Harrison, Salem, Silver Creek and Corydon Central — all Mid-Southern Conference rivals. With a win Tuesday at Scottsburg, the Braves win the MSC outright.

Their game with Madison was postponed because of the weather and wasn’t able to be rescheduled. Madison, which is new to this year’s sectional, is the only non-MSC team in the field.

Then in the Class 4A Sectional 15 at Jennings County, Seymour will play New Albany in the first game, with the winner facing Jeffersonville. Defending state champion and No. 2 Bedford North Lawrence plays Floyd Central in the second game, and Jennings County will play the winner.

Seymour beat New Albany and Floyd Central but lost to Jennings County. This week, the Owls wrap up the regular season with Hoosier Hills Conference games Tuesday at Jeffersonville and Thursday at home against BNL.

There are 402 teams in this year’s girls basketball state tournament, marking the first time 400 or more schools have entered in the 39 years of the tournament.

Sectional games run Feb. 11-15, while regionals are Feb. 22, semistates are March 1 and the four state championship games will be played for the third straight year at the Hulman Center in Terre Haute on March 8.
