Once upon a time, God’s word was scarce; it was not heard much. God was almost completely silent.
We read about that era in 1 Samuel 3:1 — “The word of the Lord was rare in those days; there was no frequent vision.” Then one day God started talking again. He spoke to the young Samuel, who became a prophet.
When the Lord withheld his word from people it was a sign of his displeasure. When God started to talk again, he spoke to Samuel. At first, God spoke in judgment to deal with sins. We should, however, understand that whenever God speaks, it is ultimately a sign of his favor.
