Agencies brace for shutdown

Federal agencies in Jackson County prepared Monday for a potential government shutdown, including the closure of offices and public properties.

The threat of shutdown today is a result of a stalled Congress where House Republicans insist they will not approve a stopgap funding measure unless Democrats agree to block money for the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, and Senate Democrats refuse to do that.

Under federal law, if an agency does not have an appropriation law in force, it cannot spend money, which in turn affects government-funded programs.
